Sonic Show 25th Art: Robotnik/Eggman! by Piggybank12 Sonic Show 25th Art: Robotnik/Eggman! by Piggybank12
Thanks to the awesome generosity of The Sonic Show, I got to make artwork for their appearance this year at Summer of Sonic 2016!  The general theme this year is, of course, the 25th Anniversary, so it made sense to design something that paid a little homage to not just Sonic's history, but also Dr. Robotnik's/Eggman's/Robuttnik's.

Unlike the first time I got to make art for SoS back in 2013, I wanted to take my time with these pieces and make stuff that could stand for itself at a huge convention already loaded with art from many people.  I don't know if I really pulled that off or not, but these were really fun to draw, so it works out either way!

(Also, this piece is by far my favorite of the two, even though it also took a while to draw.  I forgot Robotnik had so many designs... :P )

Aw man, now that you mention it, I should've put in at least 06 Eggman!  Maaaybe Eggman Nega too, but that vehicle is pretty loaded down as it is. :XD:

Holy smokes I love your drawing style!!!!! Keep up the good work!!!! :D

I have seen all of your videos on YouTube, and I am a huge fan! I was wondering if you could help me out a little.
I am heading into 9th grade this year, and I want to learn video game programming and design. My ultimate goal is to eventually find a way to work on the Sonic games (yeah. Pretty out there, but not impossible). Even though I have my heart set on game programming, I want to get started with animation. Just as a hobby type of thing (for right now), but animation all the same. I will soon be getting Adobe Animate CC. Either that, or CS5.5 Master Collection. Do you have any tips that I could use as I start my journey into animation?

I love your animations! I can't wait for more!!!! :D

Hey!  Sorry for being slow with getting back to you, but I wanted to say thanks so much for all of the compliments!  I'm honored to see you enjoy watching my work so much! :D

It's awesome that you're interested in animation as well!  You're at a great time to start messing around with it too, since you're still in school and all.  Feel free to take the time to play around with animation and see if you enjoy it, but don't forget to keep that interest in game development alive and get some other hobbies going too.  Variety is the spice of life, and all of that will carry over into everything you make, so go do stuff you enjoy and can learn from!

As for tips or advice, probably one of the most important things I've learned so far is that animation is just a tool.  Just like the software and hardware used to create it (or film making, game development and storytelling in general), one can use animation to communicate or illuminate things that mean something to the people who made it, or to others who may be looking at their work.  It's not just the act of animating stuff that can be impressive; the things you may want to end up making are just as important too, if not more important.  That idea may be just a small animation test of a tiny lizard man scurrying around a pool table, or even a four minute long fight scene, or something even more audacious.  Make things that mean something to you!
Usually, fans and attention seem to come with those things at some point or another, but I've always tried to never worry about that.  Getting to make stuff just because I wanted to make those things did a lot to get me started.  Of course, getting to show those things to my friends as I made them helped keep me going too. :P

Anyway, I hope that helps some!  Best of luck to you!

(P.S:  If you're still trying to choose between Animate CC or CS5.5 Master Collection, I'd definitely say to go with Animate CC for now.  Since it's a monthly fee thing, that should allow you to play around with it and learn it for a few months without breaking the bank.  That'll also give you a safety net, in case you happen to find animation to not be a good fit for you after a while.  I'd also try asking around to see if someone happens to have any spare copies of old animation software like Flash laying around, or if you can create animation using things you may already have.)

Hey there!
Holy smokes I can barely believe that I am actually talking to you!! :D
Don't worry about the late reply! I understand!
Thank you sooo much for the advice!! I know it will really help me! I decided to go with Animate CC. I just finished the 7 day trial a day ago. I have created two test animations (one of which is on my YouTube channel) and I started a new intro for my channel as well. I didn't get to finish it before the trial went out (:() so I will have to finish it once I pay for the program. My dad has an older version of Flash (from 2005) that he never really used, but I think the tools and tweens are mostly the same (besides the new Motion Tween in Animate).
I have done animation before (believe it or not, I just realized that), but in the form of "Stop Motion." I stopped doing that type because I just didn't have enough time to get all the pictures taken. Maybe I always wanted to animate and just never realized it!!
Again, thank you so much for your advice! I love your channel, and I will continue to love it! Can't wait to see what else you have in store! :D
Oh yeah, I don't know if you already know this, but your channel has over 19,500 subscribers (and I'm one of them)!
Thanks again!! :D

(Also, quick question!! Are you going to be animating anything in Casino Calamity? I know you did Team Sonic in Seaside Denied, and the ending of Metropolis Mayhem [loved that billboard in the background, by the way! I always keep reciting it for some reason! Uncle Chuck's Homemade Whalespray!]. Do you have any part in Casino Calamity?)

Hey, great to hear back from you! :D

If you can still use that old version of Flash, I'd totally recommend using that instead of putting down money for Animate.  You'll be surprised how little Flash has changed from the older versions to what the newer versions and Animate offers today, haha.  I actually used a hand-me-down version of Macromedia Flash 5 (made way back in 2000) for most of the animations on this profile and on my YouTube channel.  It wasn't until four or five years later that I was finally able to buy the CS5.5 collection for myself, although in hindsight I didn't really need it beyond having better compatibility for any group projects I do. :XD:

Also, if you haven't already, go download Swivel from Newgrounds.  It'll help a ton with getting any work you make in Flash out there on more modern stuff:…

Thanks again for all of the questions!

(As for Casino Calamity, I'm unfortunately not involved with it at all.  Things have been all over the place for me ever since I graduated from college, and I didn't want to possibly slow down production with my loopy schedule, so I decided to not be involved with it.  It's apparently kinda hard to consistently put time into free projects while I'm also looking for paid work, lol.  Maybe next time though!)

Hello there!!

I think Macromedia Flash 5 is actually the one I was talking about. I might have gotten names and dates mixed up. :P

Wow, so most of your animations were made using Macromedia? That's so cool! I find it really cool how you can use something released 16 years ago and incorporate it into the modern world!

Aww man! That's too bad your work won't be in Casino Calamity! I wanted to see it in there! :(
I completely understand why you skipped it, though. I have a pretty crazy schedule, too! Oh, and you said about a next time. Are there plans for another musical (I won't tell anyone if it's a secret!)?

Also, I love looking through your channel and looking at your very first animations! It is really amazing how far you've come! When I made the outro to my channel (just a simple running Sonic chao animation), I used PowerPoint and Live Movie Maker. :P I find it really cool that you started off with Movie Maker, too! I love your first animations, though (I love all of your animations)!

Oh, and one more thing (stuff keeps popping into my head so I keep writing :P)! I have started 3D art (I have a few on my profile page), and I had been thinking about drawing a 3D version of Mark and Flops for a while now. Now that I am talking to you, I wanted to ask if you would be okay with that. I would probably put them here on DeviantART (and give credit to you, of course, stating how you were the one who originally designed these characters and I just redrew them. I'd put more than that. I'm just summarizing.). Then you could see how they turned out! I haven't started drawing yet. I wanted to get your permission first. :)

I honestly couldn't tell you what the crew has planned after Casino Calamity.  I haven't been involved with the crew lately, so I know just as much as everyone else when it comes to what they're up to. :XD:  Sonic Paradox is always working on stuff though, so I'm sure they've got something brewing.

And yep, I'm completely fine with people creating Mark and Flops fan stuff!  Haven't had anyone ask about that in years, but I'm still cool with it.  You already know the drill with giving credit, but you're welcome to send it to me when it's done as well!  I'd love to see it!
TheEpicBlueKnight Featured By Owner Jul 30, 2016  Hobbyist General Artist
Awesome! I should have it up soon, and I will (try to) send it to you (I am still sort of new to deviantART, so I still have some things to figure out)!

I hope you like it! :D

O.o okay seriously...
Your art has REALLY improved!
Of course, I still love your old style.
Your new stuff looks so different :D
Reminds me of how I evolved as an artist
Piggybank12 Featured By Owner Jul 9, 2016  Professional Filmographer
Thanks so much!  Improving my art by taking things up a notch and evolving from the old style of mine has been a huge focus for me over the past year, so it means a ton to see it's leaving a great impression so far!

I've got a fondness for my old style as well, but I was really starting to struggle when I wanted to branch out and try new things.  It also made it a lot harder for me to adapt to different projects, as my draftsmanship and variety wasn't so great.  It got to the point where I couldn't ignore it anymore, and I had to step back and get better if I wanted to move forward.  I got a ton of wonderful advice though when I was able to attend CTN in Burbank last year, and I've been really working to apply it.

Hopefully, what I end up earning in the long run is a nice mix of the old and new.  Something with style, but also something that can stand up to just about anything I feel like drawing. :D
